Job Description

Flomatik are seeking trained Ciena commissioning engineers, on a contract (or permanent) basis to work on long term projects within the UK and Europe.

The role requires knowledge and experience of industry leading DWDM and Optical network builds across various OEM’s, but in particular Ciena 6500 / 4200 and Waveserver equipment. The current requirement is for national deployment throughout the UK. Candidates may also be required to work overseas. And flexibility to travel is essential.

A range of typical duties/responsibility would include:

  • The main role of the optical commissioning engineer will be to perform commissioning and test activities within POP locations, exchanges and customer sites.
  • Support the client with their field based operational activities relating to the installation and commissioning of new active and passive XWDM transmission equipment predominantly Ciena however other OEM knowledge would be an advantage.
  • Balancing of XWDM systems.
  • Provide an effective and professional interface between the direct client and any related service providers.
  • The engineer will be expected to liaise with customers on technical issues and other problems, which may arise on site.
  • The engineer will also be expected to liaise with Customer Network Operations Centres (NOC) follow instructions and provide on-site technical support.
  • Engineer’s will be expected to work without supervision and to work collaboratively with their colleagues as required.
  • The role will involve stand-alone testing, link testing, ring testing and integration into network management platforms via DCN and DCC.
  • Engineer’s will be expected to keep the Flomatik Service Delivery Team informed of all issues and be aware of the escalation procedures used within the department.
  • Ensure all site activities are completed successfully whilst maintaining a high grade of quality, service and customer focus.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Commission and integration of vendor equipment into the existing customer network. This is to be carried out to exemplary standards whilst ensuring operational integrity of associated networks is maintained.
  • Liaise with the client at a site level where applicable ensuring Flomatik Service Delivery Team are kept fully up to date.
  • Self audit all work activities and ensure all procedures are carried out in accordance with the associated site operational documentation and commissioning test specifications. Submit all operational documentation and commissioning test specifications within the customer SLA for review and consequent remote and physical site audits.
  • Ensure, Quality, Health and Safety procedures / Environmental requirements are adhered to at all times.
  • Build strong client relationships to ensure control and allow rapid development of change.
  • Ensure that Flomatik Network Services provides and delivers the highest level of performance, quality and satisfaction to its clients.

Competencies/Skills required:

  • Ciena assessed level 3 or above would be preferable but not essential
  • Comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of transmission network fundamentals and principles, XWDM, SDH, Ethernet, IP
  • Understanding of SDH/SONET/OTN Hierarchies.
  • Understanding of active & passive equipment within a live network environment
  • Experienced in the use of fibre testing equipment, e.g. Video inspection scope, OPM, OLS, etc.
  • Experienced with the testing of Transmission Networks and the configuration of required test equipment, e.g. OSA, OTDR, 10G/100Gutilising predominantly Exfo and JDSU equipment. Experience of using Ciena ITS would be advantageous.
  • Systems level trouble shooting on fibre optic telecommunications transmission equipment.
  • Experience of working in BT Exchanges, Virgin Media sites and potentially other MSO technical sites and customer premises would be an advantage.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documentation and testing procedures provided by customers.
  • Attended relevant courses for accreditation BS/SC/DV and/or NPPV level 3 Clearance would be an advantage but not a pre-requisite.
  • The job holder will build and develop strong working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • I.T. proficient and familiar with Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook/Visio and Adobe pdf.
